Yards – Philadelphia, PA
We had an interesting trip to Yard’s. It was a mid-day trip during the middle of the week so it was a slow time. Slow meaning that we were the only patrons in the place. Its in an old warehouse just off the edge of the Delaware River in Philadelphia proper. It was freezing in there – the cold bare cement floors didn’t help, but that’s part of the design. The bar is reclaimed from old bowling alley lanes, pretty nice. We tried a number of the beers and were on the fence about most of them. In many of the beers they use old recipes (loosely adhered to) that were from Presidents, Political and social figures, etc – such as Ben Franklin which of course is one among many that Philly has much history with. Using this technique you get some beers that you may either love or hate, so be prepared for that. Even those that we didn’t love, we appreciated for their uniqueness and “balsy-ness” of the brewer to make it something different.
Give it a try, in the summer so you don’t freeze – maybe you will even get to see some Eagles players as the bartender said that some of them live just across the street and they stop in now and again.
